Here there has been no PHONETIC CHANGE to obscure the link between two words from the same root, but most speakers would not associate them. You don't have to know word-histories (etymology) to use a language system, but you do have to know them to make a connection between gorge and gorgeous. That's why Saussure said:

ETYMOLOGY* and SYNCHRONIC VALUE are two different things.

(Etymology = The origin and historical development of words.)

PHONETIC CHANGE can occur without a link in meaning being lost. The prefix for the idea of “not” has developed several forms in English, all of which speakers understand and associate with each other:

indirect, impossible, irrelevant, illegal.
